For instance if, as a child, you were in the reptile house at the zoo when your parents had a major argument from then on you could associate snakes with something frightening. For children their parents fighting is very threatening to their sense of safety when they are little.

Once the initial fear occurs it is usually reinforced over and over again in different circumstances and your mind begins to focus on seeing only the frightening aspects of that particular thing.
